Inner Development Goals: Relating (Caring for Others and the World)

dangerousmeredith.substack.com

Hello! Today’s post is about the Inner Development Goal category of ‘Relating – Caring for Others and the World’.

The IDG website has this to say:

“Accepting, caring for and feeling connected to others, such as neighbours, future generations or the biosphere, helps us create more just and sustainable systems and societies for everyone.”

My response:

The next post I will write about will be about the IDG category of collaboration. As a creative practitioner who has worked in different sectors I have been involved in many collaborations, some of which have worked better than others. Collaborations that don’t work – where talent, skill, energy, and good will are squandered and where the potential of the project falls short – are collaborations where, it seems to me, those involved have rushed straight to the practical nuts and bolts of getting the project done without thinking about how they relate to each other, other stakeholders, and their environment.

So, I am basing today’s creative prompt on the following quote from Barry Lopez:

“If we attend with imagination and devotion to our conversations, we will find what we need; and someone among us will act – it does not matter whom – and we will survive.”

I think that echoes of all four of the qualities and skills included in the IDG Framework category of ‘Relating’ – connectedness, humility, empathy, appreciation (see below) - can found in this one quote. Do you agree? I also love how hopeful and trusting it is – “we will survive”.

My creative challenge to you is to recall the last conversation you participated in that was attended to with imagination and devotion. And if you can’t recall one, then daydream it, script it, or improvise it.

And then make it happen.

According to the IDG website, alongside cultivating a relationship with ourselves – a sense of being – we need to cultivate ways of relating to others by creating a sense of:

“Connectedness – Having a keen sense of being connected with and / or being a part of the larger whole, such as a community, humanity or global ecosystem

Humility – Being able to act in accordance with the needs of the situation without concern for one’s own importance

Empathy, Compassion – Ability to relate to others, oneself and nature with kindness, empathy and compassion and address related suffering

Appreciation – Relating to others and to the world with a basic sense of appreciation, gratitude and joy.”
