Dear reader,
The last creative prompt I shared was called The Sound of Silence. This fortnight’s creative prompt is about the sound of words and the sensations they can elicit.
It was inspired by a letter, written by a man who really loves words and read wonderfully in this clip by Benedict Cumberbatch:
So, my creative prompt for you is:
Choose your favourite words and describe them as if they were something you could feel or taste or smell.
For me, ‘fetish’ feels like velvet, ‘sanguine’ tastes like vanilla, and ‘savant’ smells like orange blossom.
Let me know how you get on.
My favourite English word is Serendipity (I’m a German native speaker, and in German there is not even a good word for the combo chance and coincidence). It’s word with an inbuilt surprise effect, it starts so serious “seren…” than a hobble “…dip…” then an exclamation, the climax (listen!!!) “…I…” then the revelation “…ty”.
What an interesting challenge. Thinking about this in terms of words in a novel or story … how might the associations work when some will be particularly personal. Nice prompt.
