Welcome to today’s creative prompt.
For today’s advent calendar treat, I’m going to give you something bittersweet to nibble on.
Yesterday’s prompt included a quote from a resource I wrote about feedback-giving for creative projects. I wrote this resource because so often feedback is given badly – clumsily, bluntly, inappropriately, or even cruelly.
Heedless criticism leaves a sting, sometimes for years. It can inhibit or even deter the recipients from doing the things they want to.
I remember once sitting next to a woman in a writing workshop. She was in her sixties and had only just started writing in recent years. The sad thing is that for decades she had yearned to write but had been burdened by dismissive remarks made about her writing by a school teacher when she was a kid. I loved that she found the courage to write in her sixties but was saddened that she had wasted so many years of yearning because of a careless authority figure.
Consider this excellent quotation:
Today’s challenge is for you to cast your mind back and locate, in your memory, someone who unfairly or unhelpfully sneered at your efforts.
In the privacy of your own mind, go up to them and look them in the eye and let them have it:
“May you never…”
Enjoy!
See you tomorrow.
