Your daily creative prompt
Hello!
So far in these emails I have asked you to play with creative prompts and inspirations.
Today I would like you to reflect on your own creative identity and your relationship with that: how do you perceive yourself to be creative?
Here is a little game from something I put together called Relate: A resource for connecting to your creative self.
Perhaps you played this game when you were a kid. It is simple to play but a great boost to the imagination. In it, you simply imagine one thing in terms of another. When I was a kid, we played it to pass the time on car trips by trying to guess the identity of a famous person that one of us was thinking about. We would ask: if the person were a dog, what kind of dog would they be? If they were a country, which country would they be? The qualities suggested by the answers allowed us to build up a mental picture which led to us guessing the identity of the person.
How would we use it in the context of you exploring your creative identity? Here are some examples to show you:
If your [imagination] was a dog, what kind of dog would it be? A big, noisy, bounding mutt, lovable but messy? Or a cuddly, cute, adorable lap dog?
If your [creative life] were a novel or TV show, what type would it be? A romance – a story of falling in love with yourself or your creativity? An adventure story – victory snatched against the odds. Or Science Fiction – daring to go where no man has gone before; your inner space is the final frontier?
If your [insert creative activity here] practice was food, which dish would it be? A sweet and rich dessert - delicious but quickly satiating and leaving you wanting more? A salad - crunchy, fresh, zesty, and nourishing? Or a curry - a spicy and delicious mix of ingredients?
We often shy away from giving ourselves full credit for our strengths. This is a playful way of getting around bashfulness and celebrating your creative strengths.
Relate has lots of thought exercises designed to help you to think about your creative identity. If you would like to buy a copy then go to my website.
